Each Tuesday afternoon on the second floor, something special happens. Airplane pilots and art teachers, cooks and carpenters meet in one spot and try to accomplish the same thing – improve their lives. Tuesdays from 1:30 – 3:30 pm is the Job Seeker’s Open Lab in our computer lab. Folks can come by and work on résumés, job search, fill out online applications or just see if they can find someone to network with using additional computer time. I’m there to offer assistance; so I have had the pleasure of getting to know the faces and stories of many of our area’s unemployed. I can tell you there are some hardworking, dedicated people out there doing everything they can to make a change in their lives.

For the New Year, the West Palm Beach Public Library will offer another program to help our job seekers. Life Support is a four-part series that provides you a chance to give your life a lift. In addition to working on finding the right job and creating a résumé that will get you noticed, there will be computer skill assessments and excellent advice from our own Human Resource specialist on how to arrive at your interview positive and prepared.

The library also offers many computer classes to learn the skills needed for today’s workforce like Microsoft Office and QuickBooks. Never even used a computer mouse? We can help with that as well during our new Bytes & Bits Computer Basics Workshop on Sundays and Wednesdays from 1:30 – 3:30 pm. We also have books and DVDs on a variety of computer software programs available to check out.
